Jack was stunned into silence. There was no way. ... no way. Shaun was... Madeleine's brother? No. More than that. Shaun was... dead. Jack remember whenever Mal found out- and his brother was just so... cut up about it. He kept talking about some stupid argument they'd had- kept mentioning Cecelia- but he never went into details about it. Jack never knew much about any of it really... But what he did know was that Shaun had been a good guy. And Mal really missed him. Jack's memories of Shaun were generally hazy; but now, faced with his sister, they suddenly came into sharper focus. Yes, Jack could see the resemblance now; though with the difference in heights, and general bulk he never would've placed it before. But now, parts of Madeleine's mystery as Head of the Warriors seemed to slot into place. Shaun had a been a... "Bare-knuckle fighter?" Jack said slowly. "He was, wasn't he? I remember... and Mal told me Shaun left school early... to fight Marius on his own?"

Madeleine nodded, grateful that Jack had used the word was - which therefore meant that she didn't have to explain that Shaun was dead. "Yeah, he was," she said softly. "And he did." Now that she was on the topic, memories of Malcolm came flying back to her. He'd been the one to explain to her, when she was seven years old, why the rugby ball was such a funny shape. And he and Shaun would constantly mess about in the fields. Madeleine had heard stories of their heroics on the battlefield - indeed, the whole school had! Shaun Baudelaire and Malcolm Trove were like heroes to the Warriors. So why the hell hadn't Madeleine made the connection? Of course, barely anyone had made the connection between her and Shaun, and presumably likewise for Jack and Mal. But shouldn't she have? Shaun and Malcolm also had a reputation as the troublemakers. Madeleine had heard countless retelling from the pair of things they'd gotten endless detentions for... sliding down banisters, a pechant for boyish, immature tricks... Oh. They were also notorious at the time for their womanizing. And of course, now that she knew what she was looking for, she could see so much of the boy she knew in Jack. The rugby, the jokes, the love of the fight, the promiscuousness... Stupid Madeleine. "And Mal?" she asked, smiling at Jack. "I haven't heard from him in so long - did he go on to have the rugby career?"

Jack laughed aloud at that one. Mal and his rugby career... God, he couldn't help it, the notion was just so ridiculous to him now. Even Jack and his own rugby career was beginning to sound a little ridiculous, or was that just Mal's mocking causing that reaction in him...? "No," Jack cleared his throat. "No. He's gone into business with my dad at the bank network." Oh... did that mean she...? "Do you..." Jack stopped, then took a deep breath. "So you know who my parents are?"

Madeleine nodded. "Yeah." Of course, she wasn't going to share that piece of information with anyone else. Jack kept it a closely guarded secret - she was pretty sure that even Olivia didn't know the details of Jack's background. And Madeleine admired that. Jack wasn't relying on his father's name to get him through life, he was doing things his own way, being independent. Malcolm had been like that too, and she was surprised to hear that he'd sold his soul to the banking industry. "I won't tell, don't worry," she said softly, interpreting the look on his face correctly. "It's none of my business." If Jack did remember Shaun... did that mean that he knew about her background?

Jack smiled weakly at her. "Thanks." A couple of awkward seconds swept by; both sitting in an uncomfortable silence. Jack was a little astounded by this new tie he had to his Head; he sure wouldn't have seen it coming. He got to his feet, coughing slightly, then turned, and smiled at Maddie. "Mal's actually... in Cardsdale at the moment," he told her. "But... I dunno, I don't think you should meet him. He's a bit... funny, at the moment." It was the best explanation he could offer.

Madeleine frowned at Jack, still a little overwhelmed. "Is he ill? I mean - sorry, but I haven't spoken to anyone that knew Shaun other than my family since the funeral. And it'd be nice to see how he is; it's been so long... but if you think it's a bad idea," she added. "Then, that's okay."

Jack looked at Madeleine for a few seconds; weighing it all up. Got to one conclusion. "You see him, then," he said finally. "I think he'd like to see you after all this time." And who knows? Shaun always sounded like someone who could knock some sense into Mal- a reminder of him could be just as good.

Madeleine smiled at Jack. "You sure? I mean... they seemed to have a pretty big fight not so long before... do you think that he'd be okay with seeing me, or...?"
