Madeleine shook her head. "No. They're in ... have you heard of Lylis Glen?" The memories were horrific, but Nana Magda (short for Magdalene. Madeleine loved that her mum was so imaginative, or she'd have been saddled with that name...) lived there, and they'd never let her spend Christmas alone, obviously. It was a little risky - usually she'd never let anyone know where her parents were living, but after all, they'd be moving after New Year.

"I can't say I have...did you live there as a child then?" Misa asked, genuinely interested.

What was with the interrogation? Her first instinct was to lie. Well, semi-lie. "We moved a lot, but I lived there when I was about five."

"Mmm, me too. My people were semi-nomadic. And when our own war began we were no longer able to go back to our more frequent stops. By the time I escaped, we had become Gypsies - we couldn't even stay in the same place more than a few days." Misa responded sadly. She still missed the beautiful spots in which they had stayed every summer and winter.

Madeleine was really, really taken aback by this. "I can empathise with that; we lived like that for a while. Didn't you like it?" Still, keep guarded.

"It is an experience I will...remember," Cherish, wasn't quite the right word. "In the beginning it was something of an adventure, exciting. That was when I was somewhat more niave. After I was....enlightened, it became a lot less of a game and something more like survival. Fight or Flight, you know? My people were cowards. They didn't understand you can't run away from a problem forever." She finished emphatically.

"Sometimes it's the sensible thing to do," Madeleine mused. "You can't run forever, but sometimes there are no other options left."

"Sometimes." Misa nodded, lost in random thoughts of left-behind teddies and broken homes. "I've done my running now, whether I wanted to or not. Now all that's left is to fight."

Madeleine smiled, looking at Misa approvingly. "Well said."

"Thanks," She mumbled, looking down at her turquoise and yellow shoes, disjointedly wondering what in the solar system had possessed her with them this morning, normally her shoes matched sort of at least...

Noticing Misa's slight awkwardness, Madeleine turned to the store again. "Right, so armour. You'd probably be better picking that."

Armour was simple enough. Misa soon had herself fully equipted with defense material. She was surprised at how advanced some of the equiptment was, it was lighter and more flexible yet tougher than anything she'd used before.

Madeleine smiled at Misa once she was finished. "Right, so basically what happens here is that we practise fighting against each other - within reason. It's to be played as safe as we can get it, I don't like having to send people to the Carers. At the minute, we have two non-Warriors with us, Josh and Ailith. We had more, but I had to ask them to leave for disobeying orders." She paused. "I don't take that well. I'm no better at anything than anyone else, but this is an army, I won't have people taking things into their own hands and risking other people's lives."

'This is an army.' The 'a' word sent a visible shiver down Misa's spine. She could recall only too well the last time she had been in such a circumstance. Only then she had been in Madeleine's position. She would have pitied Madeleine, but she knew the two situations could never really be compared. Namely, because Madeleine wanted to be leading but also because this was more than leading defenseless people to slaughter. They had weapons, powers; a chance. More than any of the 'soldiers' she saw so often when she closed her eyes ever had. She sighed, shaking her head slightly. "Ha-have there been many casualties?" She couldn't stop herself whispering the word.

She hesitated at Misa's tone before replying. It was better to know. "I've led two battles - in the first, we lost no one, but one of our Warriors lost a leg. This most recent battle, we... seventeen people died, and very nearly eighteen. That was a bad one; we weren't prepared as it took us almost completely by surprise. I'm not letting that happen again, don't worry."
