Ailith frowned and laughed at him. Universal sign for 'OK, that was weird'. It was funny though. "I'd love the cowboy hat thing. It'd suit you. But would that mean I'd have to return the favour? 'Cause I'll sing and all that but I'm not sure they'd allow drugs and drink in school." Ailith looked Jude in the eyes and grinned. Why is he talking to me?

He laughed. "Y'all would look pretty good in a cowboy hat..." Ooh. He'd said 'y'all'. It was a Texas habit he couldn't decide whether to break or not. On one hand, he really liked it. On the other... well... it sounded kind of weird. To a lot of people. You could easily get the mick taken out of you for it. It was just a thing. "Hey, Ailith, what are you being for Halloween?"

"I hadn't really thought about it. Well..." Ailith bowed her head and though hard. Firstly she didn't have any form of costume. Maybe she could get it from somewhere. "mmm, I could do the thing I would most hate to turn into. Which would be a semi-blonde orange-faced cheerleader I suppose." She could think of worse but decided the cheerleader thing would be the best contrast. "Why?" Ailith cocked her head at Jude.

Good question. "You?" he raised an eyebrow. "A cheerleader...? Hmm, yeah. I like it! I'm going as a zombie hobo. Wow, we'll look good together..." That was a funny way of phrasing it. He meant like hang out, but would she get that? And of course she would. So why was he twisting it around inside his own head...?

"Wow, we'll look good together ..." The sentence died. The corners of Ailith's mouth went up and she looked at the floor biting her lip desperately trying to control her laughter. She wasn't laughing at him type thing. It was almost nervous laughter. When she had controlled herself she looked up at Jude. "Yeah, I suppose." She nodded grinning.

Goddam smile. It was too perfect. As Holden would say- it killed me. Suddenly, Jude felt a thrill of nerves he wasn't used to. His mouth went a little dry, and he tried to gulp. It didn't work. Fortunately, he could keep himself pretty under control when he wanted to. Even when he seemed to be reckless, it was a controlled sort of reckless. He always measured the risks; always knew what he was doing. Even in this front line idea... reckless, yes, it was; but it was better than them all sneaking indivudually to the front line and getting caught. Which is exactly what would happen. So it wasn't really a risk. Not really. Should he take this risk? "D'you think we'd look strange?" he asked her, feeling his cheeks warm and cursing himself for it. "Like... the zombie and the cheerleader? 'Cos I'm determined to look strange. That's what Halloween's all about, yeah?"

Ailith's heart nearly skipped a beat. Is he asking me out?! I can't tell! This has never happened to me before! What do I do?! What do I say?! Ye know what, let's just chill... Ailith breathed deeply once but softly so Jude wouldn't notice. "You think we should go together?" Please say yes, please say yes, please say yes... I am hooked! Cut it out!

He blinked. Straight to the point. No fuss. No mess. She's better at asking me out than I am asking HER... he thought glumly. But his sullenless was immediately overshadowed by a massive leap of joy within him, breaking free and rushing forth with a burst of euphoria. He nearly staggered back by the sheer power of it, unsure what to make of it. Except that he couldn't stop smiling. "Make it a date?" His voice sounded strangely hoarse.

"Yeah, that'd be great!" Ailith realeased her reply breathlessly. Her face ached, her smile was hurting her cheeks now. Inside her head went something like, EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEH!. It made the sensible side of her brain cringe. Great just so long as I never make that noise aloud it'll all be fine "Shall I bring a cowboy hat?" She laughed.

He smirked. "You'd look pretty awesome in a cowboy hat, that's for sure... just not as good as me." That smile of her's was so bright now it hurt to look at it. Had he done that? Had he really made her smile like that? If so- wow.

"Awh I dunno, I could get maself a pair o' breeches, a checked-shirt, some cowgirl boots with tassles and a lasoo and hell, ye'd swear to our Holy Lord in heaven I was Texan." Ailith twanged out mimicking Jude accent to the letter. She winked and laughed. What made Ailith smile most about Jude was his pure laid-back-ness. He wasn't like other guys she'd watched with their girlfriends. She'd never seen a guy so concerned about a girl before. OK maybe that fella Lee was attentive but something happened that went wrong with Madeleine, and Ailith got the feeling that Jude wouldn't make that mistake. Ailith didn't know all the details but she got the general point that someone made a mistake and then something else happened that made it worse when it could have been solved and now there was a huge mess of emotions and teen passion and that the utter confusion blinded the people involved past the point of even trying to fix it. Jude seemed too laid back, but caring, to allow something like that to happen. And he had just asked Ailith out. What a lucky gal I am.

Jude wrinkled his nose at the word Texan. "You were almost perfect," he confessed, his eyes sweeping her appraisingly. "So close. But you said... Texan." He paused dramatically, inhaling deeply. "Listen- to- me. You are not a Texan girl. You are a Texas girl. Bigger is better. Yee-haw. Y'all. Think you can handle it?" He paused and allowed himself a grin. "Of course you can. You're just great like that, aren't cha?"

"It's perfect," Jude smiled warmly, holding out his hand and shaking her's firmly. "And it's official. You are now an honourary Texas girl."
