Madeleine shook her head at Kira, disgusted.
"Yes, I do love him," she said defiantly. "And I don't care what you think my motives are for dating Lee - but I bet they're pretty much the same as the rest of the school, right?"

"What else am I meant to think?" Kira growled, crossing her arms, and glaring at Madeleine. "He's besotted with you- kisses you at every opportunity- it's public knowledge he's in love with you. I think I'm the first person who's actually heard you love him."

Madeleine brushed that last bit off. "Why don't you go up and talk to him? I don't have a monopoly on his time, if you want to talk to him, don't let me stop you."
Was it just her, or was Kira being slightly ridiculous?

Idiot. Kira's excuse had gone down like a dead weight, and she was annoyed about it.
Didn't Madeleine realise that Kira already knew that? Kira hadn't actually told Madeleine specifically that she was the reason Lee and her were drifting, had she? Oh no, Little Miss Self-Important had just assumed so.
Sure, Madeleine was part of it. But the family letters thing had been getting to Kira too. If she spoke to Lee, then there was little doubt in her mind that her parents would get dragged up. And she'd seen Lee's letter from Bethany too.
She knew the drill.
She knew Madeleine had almost sent Lee home.
The point was, it was ever so slightly more complex than Madeleine evidently thought. The mere fact that Madeleine obviously didn't know a thing about their family lives told Kira as much.
"Okay, I won't," Kira replied smoothly.
