Chloe's initial hyperness that they were going out had faded away now, and she was back to her usual, tranquil self. Back to her rare smiles- her quiet intellect- that calming quality he so admired in her. With Madeleine, he'd felt fire; passion. Perhaps Chloe's placid nature was a good thing. He couldn't expect to fly like a bullet through relationships- fireworks fizzled out eventually.
Madeleine wasn't all fire! It was more than that, you know-
Couldn't he even lie to himself?
Chloe sat quietly in his arms, a blanket around them both. Lee rested his chin on her shoulder, happy to remain silent. He stared out at the perfectly still- aptly named- Glass Lake. Its surface unruffled by the wind, it spread before him like iron grey metal; darkened by the sky above. Winter was truly coming. Although the lake showed no sign of it, a bitter wind had struck up, swirling around the couple. Automatically, they moved closer together, savouring the others warmth.
Lee narrowed his eyes, watching the lake. He loved smooth surfaces, because it always looked like he could smash it open. He loved ripples, and the smooth bumps they created across the water's surface; but more than that, he loved it when he caused the ripples. He liked to watch the stones he threw crash into the liquid surface; disturbing it and moving it outwards as the froth flew from the point of collision.
Still, he supposed his earth powers suited him better. Taking his hand from Chloe's arm, he pressed his palm against the icy earth beneath him. Hard as a diamond, it scratched him, and he pulled it back quickly, resentful it should betray him so.
Winter was overtaking his earth. Beneath him, the rocks where hardening with frost; as though sprinkled with icing sugar. Soon, it would be buried completely- suffocated under a pure white blanket not unlike the one that wrapped itself around himself and Chloe now.
The life that had once sprung from his soil was retreating; turning in on itself and rotting away. The flowers bowed their once soft heads; black and brown in their decay. The leaves fell from his time-wearing trees, twirling through the air before landing in a heap of corpses, unceremoniously removed from their deathbeds by a dark stranger with a long pole, which will inevitably drag their bodies across the ground before piling them up again. Only then will this stranger's efforts prove to be in vain- earth's ever kind friend wind will scatter them once more and where she leaves them, will they finally rest in peace...
How cadaverous.
"It's so beautiful here," Chloe said suddenly.
In a manner of speaking. "Yeah," he said gruffly. "It is."
Chloe nodded. "It's perfect. This is perfect."
"Yes, it is."
She sighed. "Good choice for a first date."
Was that what this was? He supposed so. It was the first time the two of them had actually been alone together. And they were out somewhere. And his arms were wrapped around her-
Okay, it was a date.
"I thought you'd like this place," he said softly, his eyes watching a lifeless leaf twirl across the expressionless lake. "It reminds me of you."
"That's sweet," Chloe smiled- and as it shone from the inside, Lee felt a pang of guilt.
"Hey," he said jumping up. "Tell you what! I know exactly how to make this date special!"
Chloe narrowed her eyes at him, apparently amused. "Some sort of treat? I'm honoured."
"You should be!" he laughed, taking her hand and pulling her upwards off the ground. It was probably a good thing he was moving. His fingers had been ready to fall off.
Guiding her across the very edge of the Glass Lake, he stared down into its crystalline depths. Chloe hovered beside him expectantly. Lee didn't speak for a few moments, then turned to her and brought her around so that she was just in front of him.
"Put your arms around me and hold on as tight as you can."
Chloe raised a quizzical eyebrow. "Isn't that going a bit fast?"
He rolled his eyes. "Hold on."
Chloe nodded, putting her arms around his chest and hugging him close. Lee put his arms around her, hugging her just as tightly to him. Thank god he was a Conjurer.
"3... 2... 1..."
Riiiiiiip!
The seams of his shirt split open, and two long, black scaley wings worthy of a dragon ripped forth from his shoulder-blades; large and leathery, tipped with black spikes. He stretched them in his relief, flapping them wildly, and Chloe's shocked expression was his reward.
"Didn't see that one coming."
Laughing with genuine enjoyment for the first time on this... date of theirs, he kissed the top of her head. "Ready to fly?"
"Off to Neverland," she murmured, a smile appearing on her face too.
Together they rose, rockily at first; Lee testing out his wings and making sure he could gather enough windpower. Chloe hung on tightly; her lips pressed together anxiously as she peered at the dizzying drop downwards. Lee kissed her again, feeling her tense in her fear. But she held fast. She trusted him.
Good.
Pulling her upwards, he scooped her up in his arms properly now- she squealed in surprise- and with a smooth sweep of his wings he dived towards the crystal surface of the Glass Lake. Five seconds before collision, he veered upwards, twirling off to the side with a little more of a flourish than necessary. Laughing now, Lee began to backflip and spin across the lake's surface- his wing's spikes just dipping beneath its cool facade.
Picking up speed, he rose slowly out of reach of the now rippling water, and began to move upwards, and up and up and up- until he burst through a cloud and hurtled back down to earth. The wind whipped his hair back; Chloe now laughing in delight. Lee's laughter joined hers, but their voices were lost to the aircurrent.
A few exhilarating minutes later and they both lay laughing at the bank of the Glass Lake. Lee was exhausted, and Chloe was on a complete high, a whirlwind of emotions racing back and forth between them.
Lee pulled in his wings, conjuring a T-shirt and warm fleece from mid-air, pulling them on gratefully.
"Special enough for you?" he winked.
Chloe paused thoughtfully, getting up to face him. "Almost," she said.
Then she leant forwards to kiss him...
